As the world’s number grows older, the number of people suffering from dementia will increase. Scientists are learning more about the causes, they are discovering they can help reduce the cases being displayed.
Scientists have discovered what is good for the heart, it is also good for the brain. Physical activity and a healthy diet preserve the heart’s blood pressure to the brain. Good blood circulation keeps the brain functioning and reduces the risk of Dementia.
“Dementia is characterized by weakening of memory and other functions, such as speaking or the ability to plan and organize the day.”
Dr. Kenneth Langa led a study of over 20,000 people to assess the dangers of dementia.
“We found that the number of dementia cases dropped significantly over 2000-2012, with a 11.5% to 9% drop.”
Langa says the decline is due to the best tests for high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and other treatments that keep the cardiovascular system healthy and lower the number of heart attacks, Voa writes. He thinks that raising the level of education has also to do. Many studies show that an increase in the level of education diminishes the level of mental disorders. In the US, the education level of the population has increased over the last two decades.
“It means that a 75-year-old has less risk of dementia today than a 75-year-old 10 or 20 years ago.”
So even without the discovery of any new medication to reduce the number of cases of dementia, there appear to be a number of factors and steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of developing dementia.
